Primer Systems
The purpose of the primer is to promote resin infiltration of the demineralized dentin collagen network by improving the wettability. The dentin primers are composed of molecules with a hydrophilic end that is attracted to the dentin and a hydrophobic end exposed to the resin. Primers are carried in a solvent of aceton, ethanol or water. Primer molecules are HEMA, GPDM, or PENTA
- Acetone Based Systems
- All Bond 2, Prime and Bond 2.1/NT
- Chemical drying agent
- Apply multiple layers to wet dentin; will not work in dry dentin; cannot rewet the dentin
- Very soluble and removes water well
- Alcohol Based Systems
- Optibond FL/Solo/Plus, PQ1
- Bonds to wet or dry dentin
- Inrease contact time on dry dentin
- Multiple applications necessary on wet dentin
- Water Based Systems
- Scotchbond MP/Plus, Syntac, Clearfil SE Bond
- Best on dry dentin; does not work on wet dentin; re-expands the dry, collapsed collagen

Adhesive Systems
The adhesive system links the primer to the resin composite. They are composed of unfilled methacrylate resins, Bis-GMA or UDMA and also contain some primer. They create the resin-reinforced hybrid layer.
