Polyether

Polyether is a polymer based impression material with both carbonyl (C=O) and ether (C-O-C) functional groups. The polarity of carbonyl and ether function to attract water molecules and increase the hydrophylicity of the impression material. But this property does not come without limitations; it also allows the material to absorb moisture over time and may introduce dimensional error.

Research

  • A study by Walker MP et. al. demonstrated Polyether detail reproduction is effected very little by moisture contamination.
  • A study by Kanehira M, Finger WJ, Endo T. found that polyether may dimensionally change either by volatile loss or moisture absorption in as low as 50% humidity.
